Full Moon Salutations

Yes, you can blame the moon for a bad night’s sleep

TODAY’S WORDS
1. tossing and turning idiom
She was tossing and turning all night.
2. doze off v. phr.
例: He dozed off in the armchair.
3. anecdotal adj.
Gray’s book is anecdotal and entertaining.

If you were tossing and turning at your pillow, you are not necessarily going crazy. The full moon might be to blame for your poor sleep.
In the days close to a full moon, people take longer to doze off, sleep less deeply, and sleep for a shorter time, even if the moon is not shining in their window, a new study has found.
Anecdotal evidence has long suggested that people’s sleep patterns, moods, and even aggression, is linked to moon cycles.
Between 2000 and 2003, biologist Christian Cajochen of the University of Basel in Switzerland and his colleagues collected detailed data on the sleep patterns of 33 healthy volunteers.
Using electroencephalograms (EEG), which measure brain activity, they recorded how deep and how long each participant’s nightly sleep was in a controlled, laboratory setting. They found a striking association between poor sleep and lunar cycles.

Forgiveness 原諒

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. (Luke 6:37)

Words of the Day:
1. forgive (原諒;寬 ) to stop blaming or being angry with someone for something they have done, or not punish them for something

EX: I don't think she's ever quite forgiven me for getting her name wrong that time.
I've never found it easy to forgive and forget (= to behave as if something wrong had never happened).
I'd never forgive myself if anything happened to the kids.

2. Forgiveness (原諒;寬) the act of forgiving or the willingness to forgive
to ask for/beg forgiveness

3. forgive me (對不起,請原) used before you ask or say something that might seem rude
Forgive me for asking, but how much did you pay for your bag?

Healing Yoga after an Earthquake

Taiwan’s first earthquake prediction park opens

Eastern Taiwan Earthquake Research Center director Chang Wen-yen gestures in front of earthquake prediction facilities in Hualien County on Sept. 24.

Do earthquakes provide any identifiable precursors? Recent research into thermal infrared and gamma radiation conducted by Lee Lou-chuang, acting director of Academia Sinica’s Institute of Earth Sciences and Minister of the National Science Council (NSC), may offer new clues for predicting earthquakes.
The NSC, the Central Weather Bureau and the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering have teamed up in establishing the nation’s first Experimental Earthquake Prediction Observatory Park as part of the newly opened Eastern Taiwan Earthquake Research Center (E-TEC) at National Dong Hwa University. E-TEC convener Ma Kuo-fong says that he hopes earthquake prediction capabilities can be achieved as soon as possible in order to better meet disaster prevention needs.
Lee’s research found that prior to an earthquake, the formation of steam occurs, along with the release of radon and an increase in infrared rays, all of which are brought on by pressure from tectonic plates. On March 29 this year, Lee discovered that an unusual increase in infrared rays occurred in the ocean off the coast of Taitung, which was followed by an earthquake on March 31 with a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale. Four earthquake detection stations are currently set up at National Chung Cheng University in Chiayi County, in Pingtung County’s Kenting area, on Yangming Mountain in Taipei and at Hualien’s Dong Hwa University.

A big new study says as the world gets warmer, people are more prone to get hot under the collar. Scientists found that aggressive acts like violent crimes and wars become more likely with each added degree.
The research analyzed 60 studies of such things as the historic collapses of empires, recent wars and violent crime rates in the United States. They found a common thread — extreme weather, hot or dry, means more violence.
An author of the study said that when the weather gets bad people tend to be more willing to hurt others. The team of economists even came up with a formula that predicts how much the risk of different types of violence should increase with extreme weather.
In war-torn parts of equatorial Africa, it says, every added degree Fahrenheit or so increases the chance of conflict between groups, rebellion, war and civil unrest by 11 percent to 14 percent.
